The past few weeks

The past few weeks have flown by. I've been trying to decide where to start without leaving out some very important events. So, check back often as I spend the next few days recapping the lives of Trever and Krista.

On May 24, exactly one week before our wedding day, Trever's grandfather lost his battle with cancer. This lead to a very bittersweet week for us. When his fight began only 6 weeks earlier, there was nothing we wanted more than for him to be at the church on our wedding day. As time passed we knew this wasn't going to be an option, and apparently Grandpa Ficklin thought it was more important that cousins Sherrie and Jack were there to celebrate with us instead.

Trever did a wonderful job honoring his grandfather at the funeral. He gave me permission to share the eulogy here, but I'll warn you, it's a tear jerker.

Roy, Roy Lee, Sonny, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Brother, Friend—

My grandfather was a man who went by many different names, and looking back on it, I realize that when a man loves, and is loved by so many different people, he cannot simply go by just one name. Everyone here today had a special relationship with my grandfather, and had his or her own special name to call him.

On the night of my grandfather’s passing, my family had the opportunity to sit around and tell stories about his life. While some of those stories are not appropriate to be told today, most of them are. Some of these stories were ones I was familiar with, and others I was hearing for the very first time

My grandfather loved horses and the “cowboy life”. He loved watching western movies, especially John Wayne films. Apparently he had a scar on his right arm from a time he was thrown into a fence by a horse. Although he never owned a horse in my lifetime, his love of horses is carried on today. His son Russ, daughter-in-law Janet, and granddaughter Kelly travel across the Midwest competing in horse shows…their love for horses may not have existed, without the influence from my grandfather.

Grandpa served on the Onarga Fire Department for 30 years. His dedication to this public service was proven during the historical Crescent City fire, where he was injured helping prevent harm being done to others. His commitment to serving others may have left scars, but also helped make one of the strongest men around.

Grandpa also possessed a deep love for agriculture, and was a strong businessman. He certainly saw his share of ups and downs, and had to make difficult decisions in his life. He was innovative in creating some of the first gravity wagons, and partnered with his father in Ficklin Machine Company. He also started Ficklin Farm Account, which is today Twin County Farms, and is operated by his son Steve, daughter-in-law Jeanie, and grandson Kent. His family carries on his love for agriculture and a part of him will continue to live through them, as well as through my parents Greg and Kathy.
I was the youngest of 5 grandchildren, and my grandpa used to tell me I was “in charge” when the grandkids got together to play. If any one of my older cousins, was doing something that was against the rules, I would go running to tell grandpa….in exchange, I got a quarter.

One of my earliest memories of my grandfather was going to visit him during a stay in a hospital. He was always so proud to show the stitches and scars from his surgeries. He would walk down the hallway of the hospital pushing along a stand with his IV fluids on it. After visiting my grandpa in the hospital my sister and I would put on our bathrobes, tie a jump rope around our arm, and attach it to a highchair. We called it “playing Grandpa”. Even during a tough time in his life, he was a strong man, and my sister and looked up to him, and wanted to be like him

My grandfather set many great examples in his life. One of these is the fact that he was a family man. He loved and stood beside the same woman for nearly 58 years. As I get ready to enter a new chapter in my life, I hope that I will be able to use his love for family as an example for my own.

Many of us today may feel like we have an open wound from the loss we have experienced. But just like my grandpa’s numerous scars, this too will heal. And the scar we are left with will be a good thing, because it will remind us of all the great memories we shared with Roy Lee Ficklin.

Just 10 days to go!

Thank you for visiting our blog! It's a good thing when I don't have time to post because that means I'm not bored at work! However, I'm also a blog stalker, so I apologize to those of you who check back often and I haven't posted anything.

The countdown is nearly in the single digits. We've been working to tie up some loose ends and we are anxious for the big day to get here. Since the last post a lot has happened! How about some bullets to tell you all about it.

  • Trever, his groomsmen and ushers spent an evening in Champaign for the bachelor party. He had a great time, and I enjoyed his stories when he got home at 2 a.m.
  • We celebrated Grandpa Ficklin's birthday
  • We met with our photographer.
  • I spent 2 days at Allerton Park for the Illinois State Envirothon
  • I had a practice appointment for my hair
  • Trever was a movie star in an Angus video.
  • We were showered with kindness by the members of the Bellflower United Methodist Church
  • Conservation Day for Ford County 3rd graders went off without a hitch
  • I spent 4 days in the middle of nowhere learning about how to identify historic and pre-historic remains if I find them in someones field.
  • I planted the garden
  • I had the final fitting for my wedding dress

And here I am now!

Gettin' down on the farm!

Trever put me to work last weekend and his mom took pictures to prove it! We slick sheared 4 cows and have 3 more to go! I even put the halter on one of the cows, even though I got it stuck behind her eye instead of behind her ear. I'm learning!

Shower time!

We've got less than a month now! I've been getting cleaned up and ready for the big day. Here are a bunch of pictures commemorating the last few weeks in the world of wedding planning.

This shower was hosted by mom's friends Lori and Ruth. The picture is of the quilt my grandma made for me. It's beautiful! And you can see Sweet Pea St. Peters in between me and the camera :)

This is Ruth, me, Mom & Deb. Ruth and Deb lived with Mom in college.

The next shower was hosted by Erin in LeRoy. Everything was awesome. There was great food, pretty flowers, lots of friends and some great smelling candles!

The shower started with a mixer. We each had a name on our back and had to find our partner. Kyla got to be her brother!

Probably the most interesting game I've played at a shower. Eeryone had to draw a picture of Trever, in his underwear, on their head. Apparently Ria was cheating since her paper is on the table!

This was one of many super cool gifts we've gotten so far. Thanks Dani!

Then came the bachelorette party. The first stop was to give our balls a roll!

This picture is to prove the Kyla kicked our butt. But with all those K's on the board who knows if it was Kyla, Kathy or Krista that won.

The next clue had something to do with up and down and up and down...off to the carousel we went!

The whole crew...minus Ria.

The hottie we met at Jupiters.

I love mullets!

Then it was back to the hotel for some more games! Kara (aka Spider Monkey) was on target with her wienie.

I even cheated and my future-mother-in-law beat me!

47 days to go!

The wedding activity is starting to speed up! We've had several things going on lately. April 6th was our first shower. We received tons of great new things for our house. We've already put several of them to use!

Invitations went out early last week and we are already receiving RSVPs back. So far there will be at least 50 people there!

On Saturday we visited the bakery at Jerry's IGA in Champaign. We picked out the cake design and got to taste 4 different varieties. After all of that, Trever picked white cake with white icing! There will be a little bit of chocolate cake though.

Yesterday, Trever preached and we had some family out to our house for dinner. Since the weather was so icky, we spent the afternoon inside writing thank you notes, planning the song list, and figuring out what else we needed to be doing. I think everything is coming together just perfectly!

If anyone has pictures from the shower, I'd sure love to share them on the blog, and put them in my scrapbook!

One more registry

We've decided to go ahead and register at Target. We really didn't want to add another location but we think that Target has a few things to offer that the other stops don't have. Plus, who doesn't love a quick visit to Target!

So far all of the registry has been done online. But hopefully we can make a trip to the store and add a few more things sometime soon! It will be updated regularly!

This won't be included in the invitations (which are almost complete and ready to be mailed at the 8 weeks out.) but we wanted to share it here!

Two years!

Two years ago today was the day my students and I started working on the park in Gilman, IWHS put on the musical Oklahoma, and I (out of courtesy) invited a guy to come in to my apartment to hang out for ahwile (when all I really wanted him to do was say no thanks and I could go in and go to sleep). It's only been 2 years, but it seems like we've known each other forever!

The last few weeks have kept up pretty busy. We've been working on wedding things here and there. Work has been keeping us busy and we've been trying to spend some time with family during the Easter season.

A couple of weeks ago we had a wedding party party. We were short a bridesmaid and groomsman, but due to illness and the weather in Ohio, we'll forgive them this time. The rest of the wedding party got the chance to meet each other and hang out before the wedding. And, it was our first gathering in the house where weather (in Illinois) wasn't a problem.

The invitations came in last week. We assembled some of them Sunday when we were at my parent's house. We've got to get them stamped, addressed and sealed so they can get in the mail in about a month.

I tried my dress on a couple of weeks ago and it fit like a glove! I may not have to have any alterations except for a little bit on the lenght. I'm not use to having to shorten my clothes!

Our counseling sessions have been going well. We have one more left before Pastor Jan decides if she is going to marry us or not. :)

Saturday we ordered the decorations for the reception and I've been working on the program. I'm sure there are other things I should be doing, but I'm not sure what they are!
